Ogden and Weber County: Is EECP in Draper Practical for You?

Ogden is about 55 miles north of our clinic, so we want to be upfront: a full EECP course from Ogden is a real time commitment. For some people the potential benefits make it worthwhile. For others it will not be practical. This page is meant to help you decide honestly.

The route (approximate)

Take I-15 south from Ogden through Davis County (Layton, Kaysville, Farmington and Bountiful), past downtown Salt Lake City, and on to the 12300 South exit in Draper. Go east to Draper Parkway. Without traffic the drive is a little over an hour. At commute times, and especially through Davis County and the Salt Lake interchanges, it can stretch well past that.

By FrontRunner. FrontRunner runs from Ogden Central station south through Davis County and Salt Lake City to Draper station. FrontRunner's Draper station (12997 S. FrontRunner Blvd.) is about three miles west of the clinic. UTA Route 126 and UTA On Demand South Valley both serve the FrontRunner station and Draper Town Center, so you can connect without a car. FrontRunner runs Monday through Saturday only. The full trip takes noticeably longer than driving, but some patients find a train ride far less tiring than an hour on I-15, and they can read or rest on the way.

Making it work from Ogden

  • Ask about scheduling. The research standard is 35 one-hour sessions, often five days a week for about seven weeks. We will discuss whether another schedule is appropriate for you.
  • Avoid peak hours. Mid-day sessions may save a lot of drive time.
  • Use FrontRunner. A train ride can turn travel time into rest time.
  • Share the driving. Many patients carpool with a spouse, adult child or friend.

Hospitals Weber County residents use

Ogden residents are served by Intermountain McKay-Dee Hospital, one of Intermountain Health's major heart centers, and by Ogden Regional Medical Center, part of MountainStar Healthcare. Thrive EECP is independent and not affiliated with either. Please discuss EECP with your cardiologist, who knows your history best.

What EECP is

EECP is a noninvasive outpatient therapy. Cuffs on your calves, thighs and buttocks inflate during your heart's resting phase to send more blood back to the heart, then deflate just before each beat to reduce the heart's workload. An EKG keeps the timing in sync.

The FDA has cleared EECP for chronic stable angina and certain heart failure patients, and Medicare has covered it for qualifying angina patients. Many patients in studies report fewer angina episodes after a full course. Results vary and it is not a cure.

Winter travel

Northern Utah winters can make I-15 slow, and lake-effect storms can hit Davis and Weber counties hard. If a storm makes the drive unsafe, call us and we will reschedule. Missing a session does not undo your progress. FrontRunner can also be a safer winter option on days when roads are bad.

Is EECP the right fit from this distance?

EECP tends to be considered by people whose symptoms continue despite stents, bypass or medication, or who are not good candidates for another procedure. If that describes you, a free consultation, including an initial phone conversation, can help you decide whether the travel is worth it before you commit to anything.

Is it safe?

EECP is generally well tolerated. Common side effects are mild, such as skin irritation under the cuffs or tired leg muscles. EECP is not appropriate for everyone. People with certain irregular heart rhythms, significant aortic valve leakage (aortic insufficiency), a recent blood clot in the legs, uncontrolled high blood pressure, severe peripheral artery disease, or who are pregnant may not be candidates. We review your history and medications before you begin.

Treatment takes place only at our clinic at 1111 E. Draper Parkway, Suite 118, Draper, UT 84020. We do not have an office in Ogden.
